Overview map of Europe for speed limits on highways

Special rules in individual countries

Italia

In Italy, on highways the general speed limit is 130km/h. However, when it rains, it is advisable to drive cautiously and reduce the speed to 110km/h. Additionally, there are restrictions for new drivers (with less than 3 years of driving experience) who are only allowed to drive at 100km/h.

Germany

In Germany, there is no specific speed limit on highways, but it is recommended to adjust the speed to the road conditions, especially in case of rain, fog or snow with visibility less than 50m, the speed should be limited to 50km/h. Also, for a safe drive 130km/h is suggested.

France

In France, new drivers (with less than 3 years of driving experience) are not allowed to drive at full speed on highways and are restricted to a maximum speed of 110km/h. In case of very poor visibility (less than 50 meters of visibility) a speed limit of 50km/h applies to all drivers. There are also specific speed limits outside of towns in France. Generally, the speed limit is 90km/h, on road sections with oncoming traffic and without separating elements between the directions of travel, only 80km/h can be driven.

Austria

On highways, the normal speed limit is 130km/h. However, on highways A10, A12, A13 and A14, a speed limit of 110km/h is in effect during night time (between 22:00 and 05:00).
